A clan of heroic night creatures pledge to protect modern New York City as they did in Scotland one thousand years earlier. In the Dark Ages, there was a race of heroic warrior monsters known as Gargoyles. These creatures existed as stone in the day, but become flesh and blood at night. One Scottish clan made an alliance with humans to help protect a castle by night if the humans would protect their stone forms by day. The uneasy alliance was shattered when human prejudice provoked a betrayal that allowed the castle to be sacked and most of the resident clan destroyed, leaving only six adult survivors and a rookery of unhatched eggs. A further misunderstanding during the clan's retaliation on the invaders and rescue of their hostages left the clan frozen in stone by a magic spell that would only be broken when the "castle rises above the clouds." For a thousand years, the castle laid abandoned and the clan condemned by this curse. In 1994, a wealthy multibillionare named David Xanatos bought the castle and transported the whole structure to Manhattan where he placed it on top of the Eyrie building which he owned. It is high enough to be above the clouds, thus the conditions of the spell were met and the Gargoyles were revived. Now, this clan must adjust to this new age and gain friends, like Detective Elisa Masa who reveals that Xanatos revived them to exploit them for his unscrupulous ends. This is coupled by the fact that another Gargoyle comrade, Demona, is alive from their age, and is now an insane renegade bent on the extermination of humanity. Rebelling against them, the clan abandon the castle and pledge to protect New York like they protected the castle in the past. Gargoyles, I think is another clever cartoon action series! This show premiered on the Disney Afternoon for the first 2 seasons and then it was put on ABC Saturday Mornings for the 3rd season and the 3rd season was broadcast under a new name called Gargoyles: The Goliath Chronicles.<br/><br/>SPOILER WARNING: Unlike her fellow Gargoyles, who turn to stone at dawn, the evil Demona changes instead into a human. Season two's on-going storyline came to a climax in a compelling three-part episode leaving the Gargoyles poised on the brink of new dangers. The three-part finale concluded the story of a medieval youth who, after being attacked by Demona, swore he would destroy the Gargoyle villainess – and all of her kind. Demona eluded him, but his descendents have vowed to carry out his vendetta. Jason, Jon and Robyn Canmore, known as the Hunters, trace her to Manhattan, and discover that she isn't the only gargoyle still alive. They learn of Goliath and his existence, and will stop at nothing to destroy them!<br/><br/>Now I'm glad they show reruns of this show on Toon Disney and Jetix on ABC Family!<br/><br/>User Rating: 9/10<br/><br/>BOTTOM LINE: A CLEVER ACTION SERIES! This was a Disney after-school TV series. It's not what you'd expect from a Disney cartoon- it's darker, more dramatic, a great mix of sci-fi and fantasy. The story contains awesome plot continuity. As the series progresses more and more mythical and Shakespearean characters pop up and many Star Trek actors provide their voices. From animation voice actor regulars like Thom Adcox-Hernadez, Kath Soucie, Ed Gilbert, Bill Fagerbakke, Jeff Bennett and Frank Welker to more familiar faces like Clancy Brown, Edward Asner, Sallie Richardson, Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes and Keith David the cast is stunning. I stand by my 10-star rating for the story of these heroes! In the last few years, I've revisited this series from my childhood with the Complete First Season DVD set and Volume 1 and 2 of the Season 2 DVD sets. Still a series to share with kids growing up today! However, avoid the third season with its name changed to The Goliath Chronicles.
